This statement expresses the feelings of not only the Flint Township Board but also the residents of the Flint Township community. In this unique memorial, we will not only be honoring the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and the National Guard who have given their lives protecting our freedoms, we will also be honoring those who have served and are serving currently.
We also felt it was important to acknowledge the heroes that serve our community every day. To that end, the men and women who have honorably served and are serving this community as Flint Township Police Officers and Flint Township Firemen will also be honored.
You will approach the memorial on the Donors' Walk, this area will be for those who wish to have a paver brick that does not meet the requirements of the Hero's Plaza. Visitors will enter the Flint Township Hero's Plaza between two stones with benches on the plaza side. These stones will feature the first two lines of the statement above. As visitors enter the Hero's Plaza an eye-catching eagle in the center will greet them. As you look beyond the statue your gaze will fall upon the prominent rear wall of the memorial with the words "We Will Never Forget" engraved in the stone.
Those who wish to honor a serviceman or woman, a Flint Township Police Officer or Fireman, will be able to purchase a brick that will be placed on the walkway that pertains to their specific Branch of Service. These walkways will only contain the names of those who served honorably in the Branch of Service represented by the walkway. Each paver brick walkway will lead to an illuminated, 6' granite marker designating the Branch of Service (Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Michigan National Guard, Flint Township Police Department and Flint Township Fire Department). Flags will surround the outer edges of the Hero's Plaza. Benches will be placed behind the rear wall of the memorial that will serve as a meditation area.
The Flint Township Board has authorized the use of the Flint Township Park (located on Norko Street, near the Flint Township Police Department). We are asking the community to come together and support this memorial by purchasing paver bricks or making other tax-deductible donations and volunteering their time. This project will be constructed with donated funds, labor and materials. Those who wish to donate $1000 or more will be listed on a special plaque, which will be prominently displayed.
At this moment, The Flint Township Hero's Plaza is a concept but it can become a reality if we, as a Community, come together and show our support for those who have and will continue to put their lives on the line to protect our way of life.
If you have any questions, regarding the Flint Township Hero's Plaza, please contact Flint Township Trustee and Plaza Coordinator Tracey Tucker at 810-600-3234.
